Window Well Replacement in Wheat Ridge, CO

Wheat Ridge traded orchards and crop fields for neighborhoods, and many of those basements still rely on their first window wells. When a well rusts, cracks or caves in, our window well replacement in Wheat Ridge puts in a new one, installed to code by a licensed and insured crew.

Why Wheat Ridge Window Wells Wear Out

Before the 1960s, most of the land in Wheat Ridge was farms and orchards. Homes spread across this part of Jefferson County in the 1950s as Denver's workforce looked west for housing, and the city incorporated in 1969. Basements from that build-out have now held back soil for decades. When an original well gives way, window well replacement in Wheat Ridge is the fix that keeps dirt and water away from the window.

Clear Creek runs east and then northeast through the city, and Lena Gulch crosses the southwest side. Under many Front Range yards, the Colorado Geological Survey says, clay can swell up to 20 percent when it gets wet. Add snowmelt, spring storms and freeze-thaw, and an older well gets squeezed, shifted and soaked year after year.

Rust holes near the base

Holes along the bottom of a metal well let wet soil slide in and press against your basement window.

Gap at the foundation

A well pulling away from the wall leaves an opening where rain and melting snow run straight down.

Standing water after storms

Water that sits in the well for hours tells you the drain is clogged, buried or missing entirely.

No way to climb out

A deep well without steps or a ladder makes a basement window hard to use in an emergency.

Wheat Ridge Permit Rules for Windows and Basements

The City of Wheat Ridge says a building permit is required for new construction, additions or alterations. Its permit list specifically includes window changes or alterations, basement and tenant finishes, and interior remodels. If your project enlarges a basement window or adds a bedroom downstairs, a permit will be part of the plan, and we take care of it.

As of January 1, 2026, new permit applications in Wheat Ridge must follow the 2024 International Codes, adopted with local amendments. The city's summary of the 2024 IRC lists egress openings of at least 5.7 square feet, at least 24 inches high and 20 inches wide, with a sill no more than 44 inches above the floor.

A straight window well swap, where the window itself stays the same, can be a different story depending on your property and the scope of work. We confirm Wheat Ridge's current requirements for your address during your free estimate, so you know what applies before any work begins.

Creek Country

Clear Creek, Lena Gulch and Flood Risk in Wheat Ridge

Wheat Ridge maps floodplains along Clear Creek, its largest, plus Lena Gulch and a small area along 26th Avenue tied to drainage upstream of Sloan's Lake. The city also points out that almost two thirds of its flood claims have come from properties outside those mapped areas. In other words, a home doesn't need to be next to the creek for water to find a weak window well.

The city notes it hasn't had a 100-year flood on any of its streams since incorporating in 1969, but it still urges every resident to think about flood risk. For a basement, that starts with a well that seals to the foundation, gravel and a drain that actually work, and a cover that sheds snow and heavy rain.

Common Questions from Wheat Ridge Homeowners

Does Wheat Ridge require a permit to change a basement window?

Yes. Wheat Ridge lists window changes or alterations among the projects that need a building permit, along with basement finishes and interior remodels. If your project changes the window, we handle the permit as part of the job.

Which building code applies to my Wheat Ridge project?

Wheat Ridge adopted the 2024 International Codes with local amendments, and new permit applications have had to follow them since January 1, 2026. We plan egress windows and wells to the code in effect when your permit is issued.

My house isn't near Clear Creek. Do I still need to worry about water in my window wells?

It's worth paying attention. The city reports that almost two thirds of its flood claims have been for properties outside the mapped floodplains. Snowmelt and heavy storms can fill any well with a clogged or missing drain, so we check drainage on every estimate.

Are you licensed and insured, and do you offer financing?

Yes to both. We're licensed and insured, and financing is available on approved credit. Every estimate is free, so you can look at your options with no obligation.
